Secrets

When the candles are out and the curtains drawn, Allan creeps into her room.

“You should bathe more often,” she murmurs, as she inhales the scent of his sweat and the grime of the day.

He snorts, “’cause you’re so squeaky clean…”

“Mmm…”

A kiss, in the dark, and another. Marian trails her fingers through his hair; Allan finds the hem of her nightdress and pushes it up. They are hushed, but, just for a moment, untroubled. There’s something luxurious about the gloom.

He will be gone by morning – and no one will know but them.
