Lies
Allan-a-Dale has been telling lies since he’s been able to talk.
Deception comes as easily to him as breathing. He doesn’t think of it in terms of wrong or right. It’s just a way of life.
He’s lied to Marian, of course. Sometimes she can tell, sometimes she can’t. But there’s something about those precious eyes of hers that he can’t look at when he does it.
Not because she’s this pure, innocent creature, all virtue and light, like half of Nottingham thinks she is. (She’s as wretchedly human as he is and sometimes he wonders who she’d be if she’d had his upbringing.) But because she hasn’t had his upbringing, and because, despite whatever kind of stuck up bitch she can be, there don’t seem to be enough words on earth to describe how fundamentally good that woman is.
So he hates lying to her.
